Manori Ravindran International Editor With a week to go before kicking off the London Film Festival, the British Film Institute gathered the U.K.’s titans of cinema to toast the return of moviegoing and celebrate the next generation of filmmakers. The BFI’s Luminous gala took place at the swanky Londoner hotel in Leicester Square on Thursday evening (Sept. 29), where Variety had exclusive access. The event, which also featured the BFI and Chanel’s inaugural Filmmaker Awards, used to be a biannual bash, but was the first of its kind since the pandemic. The starry dinner convened around 400 guests, including actors Daisy Ridley, Ncuti Gatwa, Morfydd Clark, Rebel Wilson, Lily James, Malachi Kirby, Dame Joan Collins and Eddie Redmayne; directors Edgar Wright, Gurinder Chadha, Steve McQueen and Terry Gilliam; and producers including Working Title co-founder Eric Fellner, screenwriter Jemima Khan, and former BBC drama commissioner-turned-A24 international boss Piers Wenger.

EJ Panaligan editor When Scott Mescudi, better known as musician Kid Cudi to most of the world, released his debut studio record “Man on the Moon: The End of Day” in 2009, the latter half of the album included a groovy love anthem called “Enter Galactic (Love Connection Part I).” And though a sequel to the song never came out, Mescudi figured out an innovative way to dive back into the track’s affection-drenched world 13 years later. “Entergalactic” is both a new animated Netflix program — the streamer is calling it an “event” — as well as the title of his 10th studio album. They’re both being released on Sept. 30. “It’s exciting, like, never in my wildest dreams did I feel like I would revisit that song in any type of way,” Mescudi tells Variety over Zoom alongside co-star Jessica Williams. “It was something that I recorded years ago — sort of as a simple love song — but it was nice to expand upon its ideas and take it to other places, adding in characters and other storylines to see where it could go.”

Solange Knowles led the stars at the New York City Ballet on Wednesday evening, for the debut of the Fall Fashion Gala to celebrate their 10th anniversary.   The 36-year-old musician beamed as she arrived at the Lincoln Centre for the historic occasion, as she became the first Black woman to compose a score for the prestigious ballet.  Solange is also only the third woman to create music for the ballet in its 74-year-history.

Bruce Willis could make a surprise return to acting after selling the rights to allow a “digital twin” of himself to be created. Willis, 67, struck the deal last year with Delaware-based artificial intelligence company Deepcake, before retiring due to his aphasia diagnosis. Engineers at the AI-powered content optimisation web platform created an ultra-realistic digital likeness of the Die Hard star by putting images of his face into their network and can now use both his moving and talking image within films and TV productions.

Bob Saget’s final film, "Daniel’s Gotta Die," is scheduled to premiere as part of the 2022 Austin Film Festival lineup.  The comedy centers on a man named Daniel who is trying to reconnect with his family, only to realize his family is trying to kill him to get his inheritance. Saget appears in the project as a character named Lawrence, but it isn’t clear what Lawrence’s role in the movie is.  The film also stars Jason Jones, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Carly Chaikin and Iggy Pop. "Bob’s passing came as a shock to the entire ‘Daniel’s Gotta Die’ team.

Twitter has shown the hilarious moment Coolio performed Gangster's Paradise with a group of students in Preston, Lancashire.  The rapper - who died aged 59 - was filmed sat down and jamming with another young person playing the acoustic guitar.  After they performed together Coolio allegedly made a Caprese Salad, Chicken and Peach Crumble with the guitarist and his house mates.

Coolio tragically passed away at the age of 59 this week. However, his legacy will live on.

The outspoken comedian has relocated to Rumble - a rival online video platform - after one of his posts was "censored", with YouTube alleging that it featured COVID-19 disinformation. Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) just prior to the start of LGBTQ+ History Month, would create a commission to study the creation of such a museum and establish it within the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s largest museum and research complex.Both measures are required to be signed into law to create a new Smithsonian Museum.The first bill creates an eight-member commission — consisting of individuals with expertise in museum planning or LGBTQ+ research and culture — to look into the viability of establishing a national LGBTQ+ museum.The commission would be tasked with reporting recommendations for a plan of action to establish a National Museum of American LGBTQ+ History and Culture; developing a fundraising plan to support operations and maintenance; obtaining an independent review of the fundraising plan; reporting on the availability and cost of acquiring collections for the museum; identifying possible locations for the facility; and submitting a legislative plan of action to establish and construct the museum to Congress.The commission’s study would have to be completed, and all materials submitted to Congress, within 18 months of its start.The second bill, which could only be acted upon after the commission’s findings are submitted, would formally create the museum within the Smithsonian Institution, which has previously hosted queer events at its facilities.Pocan’s bill is currently being co-sponsored by all other eight out LGBTQ members of Congress, as well as 50 other House members. “As our community faces unprecedented attacks and attempts to erase our history, we must preserve and protect our stories for future generations,” Pocan said in a statement.
