The cause of death for missing British teenager Jay Slater has been confirmed after his body was found following a four-week search.

In a statement, authorities said his death was caused by "trauma" from a fall in a "rocky area". On Monday, 15 July, after an intense search operation, police found the body along with personal items believed to belong to Jay.The subsequent autopsy has sadly confirmed the worst fears of his family and a statement has been released. The High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands said in a statement: "We have a positive identification and more data: fingerprint tests show that the body is [that] of Jay Slater and that the death was caused by trauma consistent with a fall in a rocky area." Apprentice bricklayer Jay, 19, vanished on Monday, 17 June, amid the excitement of a three-day music festival in Tenerife which he was attending with friends.

Sadly, Jay had attempted an ambitious trek from the north to the south of the island on foot a daunting 11-hour journey. After a night at a secluded Airbnb with someone from the festival, Jay embarked on his long walk back to his Los Christianos resort rather than waiting for a bus.

In a troubling turn, Jay messaged his friend Lucy Law at around 8.30am on the day he disappeared, indicating that he would soon be unreachable as his phone battery was nearly dead - he also mentioned an injury from a cactus encounter.
