A son who killed his father in a hammer attack said he loved his dad and ‘can’t believe what’s happened’. Colin Neil, 51, told a jury that he had no memory of the day his father John died.

Manchester Crown Court has heard that Mr Neil was suffering from psychosis caused by undiagnosed epilepsy at the time of the fatal attack.

He repeatedly hit the 82-year-old over the head with a hammer during the incident at the home they shared in Timperley. He denies murder and manslaughter, with his lawyers arguing that he was ‘insane’ at the time of the killing and didn’t know what he was doing was wrong.

Jurors have heard Colin Neil’s younger brother had researched their family tree and found information which suggested John Neil may have had German ancestors.
