A school that sits on one of the busiest roads out of Manchester city centre held a protest today highlighting the lack of safe crossings for parents and children.

In partnership with Ardwick Climate Action (ACA), a local environmentalist group, hundreds of children from the Co-op Academy Medlock stopped the busy Friday traffic on the A6 this morning – by walking across it.

PCSOs and officers from the council were on hand to ensure the walk was carried out safely. The school, which backs onto the A6, has recently established a second entrance just off the main road.

It is directly opposite one of the entrances to Ardwick Green Park – but there is no pedestrian crossing to hand. It means that families wanting to cross to and from the school on foot must walk three minutes along the A6, a 30mph road and one of the main – and busiest – arterial routes into Manchester from the south of the city.
