By the turn of the millennium, Kylie Minogue was done with dabbling in indie and ready to reclaim her glittering Pop Princess crown.
With the release of the discoinfused Spinning Around in 2000, she was back where she belonged – at the top of the charts, celebrating her fifth No.
1. But no-one was more taken aback than Kylie herself. “I felt so many emotions at the time… elation, vindication, surprise and relief,” she said. “It was just the start we had all hoped for.” Kylie described her comeback album, Light Years, as “unashamed” and a celebration of the fact that pop was no longer “a dirty word”.
Boasting shimmery hits including Please Stay, On A Night Like This and the raunchy Robbie Williams duet, Kids, it was a far cry from the more experimental sounds of 1997’s divisive release Impossible Princess, which had failed to produce a single top 10 hit. “I wasn’t surprised that she came back to pop – it makes total sense,” said pop biographer Michael Cragg. “That was always going to be her journey. “When I saw the video [for Spinning Around], I thought, a) this is brilliant and b) this is exactly right for her now. “She was doing pop on her terms and the video was genius.
