Horrified witnesses have spoken of the moment a nurse was handcuffed outside Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital - before being released minutes later in a chaotic fumble by Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Police have apologised to the medic after she was detained. Those who witnessed the incident said it was 'alarming' and 'distressing' before the nurse was ‘de-arrested’ minutes later.

The officer involved has been' taken away from frontline duties' while an investigation is carried out. The nurse was arrested 'on suspicion of obstructing an officer following a disagreement about the best course of action for the welfare of a teenage girl'.

The child had been reported missing. Cops 'wanted to make sure she was safe and well', GMP said in a statement. Police have also apologised to senior hospital leaders for the 'disappointing way this incident escalated'.
