Hearts defeat down to wrong tactics, admits East Kilbride boss as he turns attention to cup

Boss Mick Kennedy held his hands up and admitted he got his tactics wrong after his Lowland League champions-elect suffered defeat to Hearts B last Friday night.Kilby require just a few more wins to wrap up the title early but suffered a slight setback when they went down 4-2 to the young Jambos.His side were struggling with injuries but he conceded mistakes were made in their approach to the game, which had them trailing 3-1 at the break before the hosts ran out 4-2 winners.Doubles from James Wilson and Callum Sandilands did the damage for Hearts, while John Robertson and Robert Thomson were on target for Kilby.And Kennedy said: “We changed the shape to a 3-5-2 with a couple of players out injured and we probably didn’t help the boys doing that.“Although we spent a bit of time working on it in training on Thursday, it wasn’t the brightest idea on reflection against a good Hearts team, who are good on the transition and at exploiting space.“It’s not the smartest move from me and sometimes you have to take a bit of responsibility.“We should have been equalising at 3-2 with some of the opportunities we missed but the shape didn’t help us and that’s why we were 3-1 down at half-time.“We obviously changed things at the break but we had no centre-halves and only three fully fit defenders.“It was one of those days where we were struggling for players.“Playing on the Tuesday night [in a 2-1 win away to Broomhill in the Lowland Cup] on a heavy pitch and then again on Friday, the boys looked a bit tired and leggy against a full-time team.”EK’s lead at the summit has been cut to 12 points by second place Cumbernauld Colts, while Tranent, who have two games in hand, are 15 points adrift.Kennedy added: “Tranent have got nine games
