'For decades I dreamed of being a writer - here's how I finally cracked it at 50'

Seeing my book in the window of Waterstones was my number one goal when I decided to write a novel during lockdown. But while I was confident in my writing and the story I’d settled on, I knew getting a publishing deal would be no easy feat.

After all, it wouldn’t be the first time I’d tried. I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember, starting with a choose-your-own-adventure book when I was about ten, complete with secret tunnels and dragons.

Okay so I didn’t actually try to get that one published, but it was the beginning of a lifelong dream.There followed three or four notebooks full of angsty poems in my teens, mostly about unrequited crushes and boys behaving badly, along with lyrics for my favourite artists at the time (step forward Bon Jovi and DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince).

But it was in my early twenties that I returned to my dream of being a bona fide author.The first book I wrote, while travelling around Australia, was a Bridget Jones-esque rom com about two girls competing in both love and life.
