Football star Alex Fletcher has been forced to retire from the sport at the tender age of 25. It comes after the player was involved in a horrific accident which saw him in a coma with a fractured skull.

Alex, 25, was involved in an accident in 2022 when he crashed into an advertising hoarding while playing for Bath City in a National League South clash against Dulwich Hamlet.

He suffered a serious head injury and underwent emergency surgery, before needing to relearn how to walk. After a tough recovery, he returned to the pitch nine months later and joined Weston-super-Mare last October.

He made 11 appearances last season, scoring once but just months later the footballer decided to call time on his career. Alex confirmed the news in a social media post and wrote: "For me, carrying on playing football would be one step too far, and I'm really gutted about it. "I think I owed it to myself to get back on the pitch, that really did drive my recovery. "I felt like if I had that opportunity to return to the pitch stripped away from me, I wouldn't have been able to deal with that emotionally. "Since I've made my recovery back on the pitch there was something about my game that was missing. "All three of those components for football are the biggest part of what made me a good player." Alex also shared that he hasn't "felt the same" since his accident and continues to struggle with his balance, timing and coordination.
