Five cross-country skiers - including members of the same family - have tragically lost their lives near Switzerland's popular Matterhorn after getting caught out in a huge snow storm.

The search is still ongoing for a sixth skier. In a press conference held in Sion, Switzerland, Valais regional police commander Christian Varone revealed that conditions were "relatively good" when the group started their journey on Saturday but things became challenging very quickly.

Their route was from Zermatt resort town, at the foot of the Matterhorn, towards Arolla, a village near the Italian border. The authorities already began looking for them on Sunday, under extremely tough weather conditions. The group were aged between 21 and 58 and consisted of five family members from the Valais region and another person from Fribourg.

Further details were not provided including names or who was still missing. The police spokesman said: "Unfortunately this region is accustomed to tragedies like this," alluding to the death of seven hikers in 2018, comprised of six Italians and one Bulgarian.A relative reported the party missing on Saturday evening after they didn't reach Arolla as planned. One of the skiers managed to call the rescue team, which helped them find where they were near the "Tete Blanche" ridge, high up at about 3,500 meters, the police shared. This led to a quick start in looking for them.
