Health officials have warned that cases of an infection that 'remains a serious public health issue' have been increasing. Tuberculosis - known also as TB - is an infection affecting the lungs.
It can be treated with antibiotics - but if left untreated it can become serious, according to the NHS. Cases of the infection increased by 7 per cent in England in the first half of 2023 compared to last year, data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates.
Notifications for the first half of the year hit 2,408 - up from 2,251 for the same period in 2022. The UKHSA stressed that England remains a 'low-incidence' country.
However, progress towards eliminating the disease completely in the UK has stalled in recent years. Now, the UKHSA has issued a warning, reminding people that TB is not just a problem for other countries – it is impacting increasing numbers of people at home.
