Farmer, 75, shot dead in field named and pictured for first time

A farmer who was shot dead in West Lancashire has been named as Thomas Olverson. The 75-year-old suffered fatal gunshot wounds on what is believed to be his own field, on Pinfold Lane in the village of Scarisbrick, near Southport, shortly before 5pm on Thursday (July 25).

Police and paramedics, including the air ambulance, raced to the scene but despite the best efforts of the emergency services, Mr Olverson was declared dead at the scene.

A 29-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and remains in custody. A shotgun was recovered from the scene.

Today (Saturday), Lancashire Police confirmed Mr Olveron's identity and that he was of Marsh Hey Farm on Pinfold Lane. Neighbours living close to the farm have spoken of their shock at the tragedy.
