Hall of Famer Dick Malone was back at Somerset Park for Saturday’s win over Inverness.The former right back – part of the legendary ‘Stewart, Malone, Murphy’ 1969 team – toured his old stomping ground and met fans young and old.
Malone famously went on to win the FA Cup with Sunderland – beating Don Revie’s great Leeds side in 1973 – after his successful spell at Somerset.Andy McInnes is founder of the United Former Players’ Club and hosted Dick on his highly anticipated return.
He said: “It was fantastic to welcome Dick back to Somerset and the reaction of the supporters was something else. When he walked into the Hub, everyone just burst into applause.“He is part of our greatest ever team and is rightly remembered with so much affection to a generation of our support and those who have come later have heard so much about him and his teammates.
He went round every table and was the absolute gentleman. It was a pleasure to have him back.”Malone was joined at Somerset on Saturday by fellow ex-United stars Sam McMillan, Neil Hood and Jackie Ferguson.
