Netflix's upcoming British sci-fi series featuring a predominantly black cast has been given the nod by rapper Jay-Z. Supacell is the brainchild of rapper and filmmaker Rapman, also known as Andrew Onwubolu.
The exciting new series has been tipped as a cross between gangster series Top Boy and hit superhero show Misfits. Rapman announced Supacell in 2020, a year after the release of his crime-thriller film Blue Story.
His latest project follows a group of young Londoners who suddenly develop superpowers. Protagonist Michael Lasaki must assemble the unlikely crew as they race against time to save his fiancé.
A fan of the superhero genre, Rapman created the series because he wasn't fully satisfied with its tropes. "If I got powers, my first thing wouldn’t be to go and buy a spandex outfit," he previously told Deadline. “I was thinking ‘What can I use my powers for to put my family in a better position?'" Rapman signed to Roc Nation, Jay-Z's management company in 2018 - and revealed the billionaire rapper had nothing but praise for the show after he previewed the first few episodes.
