A Paisley military veteran has overcome cancer and the death of his beloved wife to find new direction in his life at such a trying time – his artwork is set to appear in one of the country’s premier galleries.Jim McGoran, 77, tragically lost his wife Jean in 2021 and found himself not knowing what to do with himself until eventually he was pointed in the direction of an arts group. The former Army Cadet had been caring for Jean – who was living with Alzheimer’s – while also fighting his own battle with oesophageal cancer and a skull carcinoma.

He would eventually overcome his own ailments, but any delight at that success would be obliterated when Jean passed away.“Jean retired from being a teacher at 60 and I noticed a gradual change in her behaviour.

It was the start of a very traumatic time for us all as a family, and that combined with my own illness really started to take its toll,” said Jim.The pensioner found solace at Erskine Reid Macewen Activities Centre (ERMAC), part of the Erskine charity’s offering at their Veterans Village in Bishopton.

ERMAC aims to enhance the quality of life and wellbeing of veterans in the community, providing the opportunity to engage with people who have shared experiences and history, learn new skills, explore a number of interests and access support services.
