Scores of pensioners across the country are facing "massive delays" in getting essential welfare payments that help top-up their regular pension, sparking a debate in parliament this week.
Some pensioners have described waiting around six months to get their pension credit payments, which can be worth more than £8000 in back pay by the time some people receive their entitlement.
Many of these pensioners are among the poorest in their age cohort and need access to their money right away. Pension credit is paid to people over the state pension age who are on low incomes and face difficult choices amid high cost pressures.
But, Department for Work and Pensions minister Paul Maynard downplayed the concerns, insisting the Government has an “excellent” delivery record and “extremely low levels” of complaints.
