A drugs gang boss who sobbed in his mugshot after he was caught shipping £2m of cocaine and cannabis has been jailed. Samuel Brough, 34, played a significant role in the peddling of drugs on an "industrial scale", the ECHO reports.

His gang, based in Warrington but with links across the UK, exploited Covid restrictions by using a liveried company van which allowed them to continue supplying drugs and maximising profits during lockdown.

Brough was identified through his use of multiple EncroChat phones. An investigation by Cheshire Constabulary, which began looking into his illicit activities in March 2021, revealed that Brough, of Warrington Road, Northwich, was the principal member of the organised crime group (OCG). The total turnover was £1.9m in cash. However, there was also extensive proof he had been involved in such criminality long before this brief period was uncovered by Operation Venetic - an international operation targeting criminals who used the mobile encryption service to try to evade detection.
