A medical expert has explained the potential health risks of fruit flies as the pests invade homes across the UK.Not only are the bugs a nuisance during the warmer months, they could also be contaminating your food with disease-causing bacteria.
Those who suffer from allergies need to be extra vigilant, as the critters can also trigger reactions, according to Dr Simon Theobalds of Pall Mall Medical. Also known as Drosophila melanogaster, fruit flies are more prevalent during the summer and their numbers peak at the tail end of the season.
As they take shelter inside homes to feast on food, the bugs can carry germs in with them and lay eggs - often on the same fruit and veg they feast on.Speaking on their health risks, Dr Theobald explained: “Fruit flies can be potentially harmful to health due to their ability to contaminate food and spread certain diseases.
They are attracted to ripe or decaying fruits and vegetables, as well as sugary substances.“So, when they land on these foods, they can transfer bacteria and other pathogens from their bodies and lay eggs on the surface.
