A controversial three-week public consultation on plans to close nearly all railway station ticket offices in England has been extended, it was confirmed today.

The Rail Delivery Group said train operators were extending the time available to respond to the plans by an extra five and a half weeks until September 1.

The move, said the group, illustrated operators were 'listening to feedback', although a group of mayors including Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, have initiated legal action.

The RDG announced on July 5 the public would have 21 days to have their say, with the plans involving the closure of almost all of the 1,007 remaining ticket offices in the country, including more than 50 in Greater Manchester.
