Work has started on Ayr's controversial new Riverside flats that will be built next to a 'ghost' tower block. A total of 75 new affordable homes are set to be constructed at Riverside Place, on the land that was previously occupied with two tower blocks. The multimillion project will see builders Ashleigh Scotland build the new council flats.

The project was marred with controversy after council chiefs revealed that the project would cost more than expected and see a reduction of homes from 90 to just 75.The flats will also be build next to the last tower block standing with the council not able to touch the block until their contract with EE expires, after a legal war erupted over phone masts. But council chiefs have vowed to push on with the new flats, with the properties set to be completed by May 2025.

The new flats will consist of 43 one bedroom properties and 32, two bedroom properties; five of the homes will be fully wheelchair accessible.

The project will cost around £17.2m including a £6.7m contribution from the Scottish Government.Councillor Martin Kilbride, buildings, housing and environment portfolio holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “It’s fantastic that works are underway at this exciting development. "Another 75 affordable homes is great news for Ayr and underlines our commitment to build energy efficient and affordable properties which meet the needs of tenants.“The development will be carried out over five phases.
