Burns’ statue has been cleaned and the scaffolding removed from the town centre job ahead of schedule. Dumfries and Galloway Council expected the work to take five weeks to complete, but the revamp was finished in three.

And the clean up has prompted praise from the public and shopkeepers. One shop boss said: “It’s great to see the results of this work. “And the workmen were brilliant at what they did, plus the scaffolding was brought down and removed in a day.” Donald Gibson, of Torthorwald, said in a letter submitted to today’s Standard: “I am delighted to see that our iconic monument to Robert Burns has at last been properly cleaned and restored. “The team of specialists from Graciela Ainsworth Sculpture Conservation Ltd are to be congratulated for completing the work well ahead of schedule and returning the monument to its original pristine condition. “The statue now needs to be carefully monitored as its marble surface will surely continue the process of deterioration as it is exposed to acid rain, attack from seagulls, traffic fumes and air pollution.” A spokeswoman for the council said: “We are pleased with the results and delighted that local businesses have taken the time to comment so positively. “The works were carefully carried out by accredited conservation contractors who specialise in the restoration of historic monuments.” She added: “The statue is a Historic B Listed Monument overseen by Historic Scotland and is an outdoor monument, therefore the marble will weather over time.
