Broadway Advocacy Coalition Names Elz Cuya Jones As Executive Director

Broadway Advocacy Coalition, the arts-based advocacy nonprofit that won a 2021 Special Tony Award for providing a platform for underrepresented members of the theater community, has named Elz Cuya Jones as its new executive director.

Jones takes over for BAC’s outdoing and founding executive director Robb Nannus, effective September 23. Before joining Broadway Advocacy Coalition, Jones led the all-women of color development team at North Star Fund, a community foundation that supports grassroots organizing for social justice movements in New York.

Today, she serves as Vice Chair of Advocacy Institute, an organization that supports the legislative and policy work of community leaders working for equity and justice.

Founded in 2016, BAC’s stated mission is to use arts and storytelling “to build a more equitable society — and build the collective capacity of individuals, organizations, and coalitions to do the same.” Richard Gray, Chair of the BAC Board of Directors, said in a statement, “Elz comes to BAC with a tremendous range of leadership capacities and experiences and, most importantly, a new energy and vision of transformational change that will lovingly challenge us to seek new ways for our work to grow and have greater impact.” BAC will present its annual gala, The Artivism Ball, on Monday, October 14, and will celebrate the Emmy-winning and Academy Award, Golden Globe, and Tony-nominated actor, playwright, and director Colman Domingo, and Co-Executive Director of the New York State Alliance for Quality Education Zakiyah Shaakir-Ansari.
