Ayrshire boxing club celebrates golden success at national competition

Irvine Vineburgh Boxing Club members proved they can pack a punch after sealing six golds at a prestigious national event.The club bagged a total of six golds and two silvers at the recent Scottish Schoolboy and Junior Golden Gloves competition, held at Ravenscraig in Motherwell.And the special sextet of golds takes the club past a remarkable milestone as it takes them beyond the century mark of top titles since being formed 18 years ago.Liam Boyd proved unstoppable as he defeated both Cooper Irving and two-time GB champ Zain Iqbal on his way to a second Scottish Golden Gloves success as he won the 52kg 2009 category.It was a 2008 double for the club as Oscar Steele won the 60kg category with club-mate Arron Friels winning at 42kg.Oscar defeat Logan Rae and Lee Johnstone to win his fourth title with Arron getting the better of Zack Whyte for his second national gold.The club repeated the double in the same weight categories at the 2011 age group with Lucas Boyd winning after his opponent withdrew while Kyle Donohoe couldn’t be beaten as he got the better of both Riley Skirving and Joe McGunningle to be crowned champ.Billy Lowe made it six golds for the club as he clinched the 37kg 2013 title with a win over Tony Johnstone.There were also well-earned silver medals for both Calvin Corrins (42kg 2013) and Niall McGowan (37 kg 2011) to bring the medal haul to eight.Calvin defeated Aaron Napier but couldn’t get the win over Mason Scobie in the final, while it was a win over Adam Khan for Niall but defeat in the final at the hands of Victor Bogdevic.Speaking to the Herald, proud club coach Alec Mullen said: “I’m absolutely delighted for all the young boxers who dedicate their young lives to becoming a successful boxer and
