Albion Rovers got their first pre-season victory under their belts after two second half goals saw off plucky Cumbernauld United. In a game littered with chances, it took until the 67th minute for the hosts to find a breakthrough with Adam Fernie's deflected header putting Rovers in front, before a trialist sealed the win at a sunkissed Cliftonhill soon after.

Paul Brennan did strike at the death to grab a consolation for Cumbernauld. But for some inspired goalkeeping and fine defensive work from the visitors, the Wee Rovers would have claimed a more handsome victory in their opening home game of their 2024/25 preparations. The Lowland League outfit - who finished ninth in the league last term - handed starts to all four of their summer signings, as Marcus Lavery, Paul Kennedy, Callum Home and Kai Kirkpatrick were all given the nod by boss Sandy Clark. The Monklands men were on the end of a 4-0 defeat to derby rivals Airdrieonians last week, a side sitting three divisions above them in the Scottish Championship, and this week faced Jamie Nesbitt's United side who are two tiers below them in the West of Scotland First Division. In 12 minutes Kirkpatrick did well to cut inside and create space for a cross, and when he played a tantalising ball across the face of goal, Michael Paton came agonisingly close to connecting but the big chance for an early lead escaped them.Just seconds later, Paton should have broken the deadlock when Adam Fernie's cross from the right picked him out perfectly in the centre of the box, only for him to steer a header inches wide of the far post.Rovers came even closer to an opener on the half hour mark when Josh Tran's corner from the right was whipped towards the far post.
