The 23-year-old made history to become the first Chinese player to win an ATP Tour title and the highest ranked Chinese male player in tennis history – 58th. “I made history for my country, I’m proud of myself,” he said. Yibing defeated American John Isner, the No 5 seed, in a three tie-break match: 6-7 (4), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (12).
When asked how he has made it this far in tennis, Yibing told ATP, “Back in China I have my support team, especially Team China and the association, they give us the best conditions to play, the chances to travel around the world and support us.” He continued, “Also my family.
I haven’t seen my family in more than a year. Back in China because of the pandemic and the Covid situation, I’m not allowed to go back home like every day so I can see my parents or my grandparents maybe like twice a week or twice in two weeks.
