Golf superstar Rory McIlroy is setting his sights on gold at the 2024 Paris Olympics – but he won't be representing Team GB.Three years after narrowly missing out on a medal at Tokyo 2020, McIlroy has returned to the Summer Games with hopes of making it onto the podium this time around.
The men's tournament gets underway on Thursday and runs through the weekend, culminating on Sunday when the medallists will be crowned. Some viewers may be surprised to see McIlroy competing under the Irish flag, just as he did in his Olympic debut three years ago.
That's because despite being eligible to represent both Ireland and Team GB, the Northern Ireland native has always found the decision to be a straightforward one, reported The Mirror."Once I left trying not to upset anyone aside, then it was actually a pretty easy decision," he said prior to his Olympic bow at Tokyo 2020. "The decision was I'm going to play golf for the country or the nation that I've always played for through my junior and amateur days and now into the professional game.
And that's Ireland."Despite Northern Ireland's ties to the United Kingdom, many athletes hailing from the region opt for the unified Ireland team when it comes to the Olympics.
