Stargazers are in for a treat this month as not one but two supermoons will make an appearance in the night sky. A supermoon is when a full moon occurs when it is closest to the earth.
When this happens the moon appears up to 14 per cent bigger and 30 per cent brighter than it does when its furthest away. This month we’ll be able to see both supermoons from the UK.
The first supermoon will occur on Tuesday August 1, according to the Royal Observatory. It’ll peak at 7.31pm and the moon will be 222,159 miles away from earth.
This supermoon is also known as a ‘sturgeon’ moon, it was named by North American fishing tribes as the lakes would be plentiful with the fish during August.
