MPs will vote on whether or not they agree with plans to scale back the number of pensioners who can claim the winter fuel payment - which is worth up to £300 a year.
The payment was previously available to everyone above state pension age and worth up to £300 per year. However under the proposal, which will be voted on by MPs, Labour is looking to means test for the payment and restricted to those receiving Pension Credit.
If approved it means that around 10 million pensioners will lose out on the allowance this winter. The government said it is looking to make the changes as it needs to help fill a £22 billion “black hole” in this year’s budget. There is not set time for when the vote will take place, but it will be after the debate sometime in the afternoon. Ahead of the vote 17 Labour MPs had signed a motion put forward by Neil Duncan-Jordan, one of the parliamentary party’s newly elected members, calling on the Government to delay implementing the cut.
