A walker was airlifted to hospital after fracturing her ankle at a Peak District beauty spot. A rescue operation was launched after the woman injured herself at the top of Hern Clough on the moors above Glossop on Saturday afternoon.

Volunteers from Glossop Mountain Rescue Team were called out at about 4.45pm. But after assessing the woman's injuries it was decided to call an air ambulance and she was flown to hospital for further treatment. A spokesperson for GMRT said: "The team was called out on Saturday afternoon at 4.45pm for a female with a lower leg injury, at the top of Hern Clough.

Team members were deployed from Snake Summit along the Pennine Way to the casualty's reported location. "On arrival and following an initial assessment, the female looked to have a fractured ankle.

The decision was taken to call for an air ambulance. "The air ambulance arrived within 20 minutes and the casualty was taken to Sheffield Royal hospital for further treatment.
