People are being urged to avoid a popular beauty spot after a landslide caused raw sewage to be released into a stream. The Environment Agency is investigating the 'potential pollution incident' at Prestwich Clough, which is believed to have been caused by a sewage pipe being damaged during heavy rain.
Footpaths have been closed and residents have been warned to avoid the area and keep dogs on leads. Several trees were uprooted as a result of the landslide, United Utilities said.
The incident happened on the same day a huge sinkhole opened up a short distance away in Heywood Road, Prestwich. Coun Alan Quinn, Bury council's cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said the two incidents were 'the effect of climate change'.
In a tweet on Monday evening, he added: "Please can you stay away from the Prestwich Clough area near Clough Drive/Mountfield Crescent for the near future due to a landslip.
