Works to reinforce the roof of the gym halls at Castlehead High School in Paisley after the discovery of potentially dangerous concrete are "on track" for completion next month.

Reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) – a lightweight material that can be susceptible to failure when exposed to moisture – was identified at the Camphill facility last October.

A contract for strengthening works – worth in excess of £800,000 – was approved by Renfrewshire Council's finance, resources and customer services policy board in April. An update, which will be considered at this Thursday's education and children's services policy board, explained: "Work is ongoing to strengthen the roof above the gym areas at Castlehead High School.

The contractor began works in time for the summer holiday period to ensure that disruption is mitigated and the project can move at pace."The project remains on track for completion in September and plans are in place for the works to complete in the final few weeks when the school returns to minimise any impact on pupils and staff."Councillor Kenny MacLaren, an SNP representative for Paisley Northwest, said: "I am pleased that the work is progressing well and that the school should have the full use of its gym hall by the end of September.
