A Ukrainian family happily settled in the Glenkens is facing an uncertain future after being told they have to leave their home.

Vika and Firas Jouja arrived in August 2022 along with their children Olexandra, Bogdana and Amir. The pair have built up a successful Ukrainian bakery business and the kids attend school at Dalry.

But after making a harrowing escape from the Russian invasion they could soon be on the move again. According to the couple, the owner needs the property for someone else and they need to be out by October 1.

Speaking at their busy stall at Castle Douglas Producers Market on Sunday, Firas said: “The owners have told us that the house is needed, which we understand. “But we have Jessica our Siberian Laika, Lily the Labrador, geese, chickens and two cats. “We don’t know what we are going to do. “If anybody knows anyone who could help us find a home in the area we would be very grateful. “We need a roof over our heads, especially for the children.” Vika added: “We have a friend who may be able to take the chickens and geese but we hope we can take them with us. “Jessica came all the way from Ukraine with the family. “People here are so kind – many have said if you need a reference we will give you one.” Issues such as car insurance are also presenting mobility difficulties for the couple when they move.
