Two people were taken to hospital after a major rescue operation at the River Irwell in Radcliffe, police have said. A huge emergency services response raced to the scene on Stand Lane at around 8.10pm last night (Monday).

Police, fire crews, water rescue units and paramedics were pictured on the scene. The bridge over the river was cordoned off as crews responded to a 'concern for welfare' report.

It is understood that one person got into difficulty in the water before others jumped in to try and help them. READ NEXT: Machete pulled out on cops before suspect 'jumps over garden fences' The fire service said last night that two men and one woman were helped from the water.
