Taxi prices in Manchester are set to rise. Day and night tariffs; cost per mile; and waiting time fares are all due to be hiked under plans approved by town hall bosses.

Acceptance of card payments will also soon be mandatory for Hackney Carriage drivers. Speaking at the council's latest executive meeting, councillor Lee-Ann Igbon, executive member for 'vibrant neighbourhoods', said the increases will allow cabbies can maintain their vehicles properly; meet town hall standards; and earn a 'real living wage'.

It comes in the wake of concern raised by unions GMB and Unite, which highlighted the challenges drivers face in the current economic climate. The current price of a two mile journey would increase from £7 to £8.20, or from £9.20 to £10.30 during the night-time or on a public holiday.
