Two Second World War detonators were blown up in a controlled explosion last night after being discovered at a beauty spot by a metal detecting enthusiast.
Bomb disposal experts were called in and residents ordered to stay indoors after a hobbyist found the items, and others from the same era, at Rivington Pike.
He took them home and alerted emergency services after cleaning the items, believed to be artillery fuses, and realising what they were. Those living in the area also say they were told to remain indoors for several hours. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit attended and eventually took the items away, which were destroyed in a controlled explosion at Pennington Flash.
