Pension experts at Spencer Churchill are urging older women, mostly in their 60s and 70s, to be on the lookout for letters from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) regarding State Pension arrears payments worth around £5,000.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently confirmed that HMRC has issued thousands of letters to older people who may have Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) missing from their National Insurance (NI) record.

The DWP and HMRC are working together to find people affected by the administration error and correct their files so that they can receive the right amount of State Pension.

Some 210,000 women are due a share of underpayments totalling £1.3 billion pounds - equivalent to some £5,000 each. A spokesperson for Spencer Churchill said: “The DWP's initiative to send out £5,000 State Pension back payment letters underscores the significance of reviewing your correspondence carefully.”They continued: “Many individuals may be owed substantial sums of money, and failing to check your post could result in missing out on a much-needed financial boost."The error related to Home Responsibilities Protection (HRP) is a crucial reminder of how administrative oversights can impact pension entitlements.
