The SNP have suffered a terrible night in the general election in Scotland after they were handed their worst result since 2010.John Swinney's party went from 48 seats which they won in the 2019 general election to an expected total of just 10, based on Thursday night's exit poll.It included dozens of seats lost to Labour across major cities and the central belt. The Nationalists also lost a seat to the Tories in the north-east, although gained a seat by defeating Douglas Ross. But the drubbing meant the loss of a slew of high-profile SNP politicians in various corners of the country.
In Edinburgh South West, the outspoken Joanna Cherry was defeated by Labour's Scott Arthur in a blow for the Nationalists.
Arthur, a Labour councillor in Edinburgh, came from a distant third place to win the seat. He overhauled Cherry to win 18,663 votes to the SNP politician's 12,466, a majority of 6197.
Deputy Westminster leader Kirsten Oswald was ousted in East Renfrewshire by Labour's Blair McDougall - once the head strategist of the 2014 Better Together campaign against independence.
