Experts have shared some tips to help homeowners figure out whether they or their neighbour own a garden fence. When fences are set up between house borders it can be tricky to tell who owns it.
This is especially the case if it was put up before one - or both - of the neighbours moved into their homes. If you have moved into a home and are unsure whether or not you own a fence, you may be hesitant to paint or replace it.
The uncertainty may also lead to questions around who repairs a fence if it gets damaged. As reported by the Express, the first thing that you should do is figure out what way the fence is pointing.
This is because homeowners will often have the "good" side facing outwards. The experts at Jacksons Fencing explained: "Typically, you can guess who owns a fence by seeing where the rails are, with the fence typically facing away from their property so that their neighbour gets the ‘good’ side of the fence. "This is the most secure way of facing fencing so there are no rails for anyone to use to climb into your garden.
