Shaun Maloney reveals the moment his Hibs career went off the rails as he plots management return with Euro trip

Former Hibs boss Shaun Maloney admits he knew he was facing an uphill battle from the moment Kevin Nisbet got injured. And he confirmed he is doing all the steps required to return as a better coach - after returning from a month travelling around the continent learning the trade.Maloney left his role as Belgium assistant for a return to Scottish football in December 2021 but was relieved of his duties following a Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Hearts in April which was coupled with indifferent domestic form.

He has since entered brief talks with Dundee over a managerial vacancy however nothing came from it. Maloney insists he does want a return to the dugout but it has to be at a club that share his values and revealed how helpful the likes of Barcelona have been with him while he’s been out of work.He told World Football Index: "In the time I have had since leaving the club, I have learned a lot by spending a huge amount of time with my staff reviewing all aspects of our time at Hibernian.

I have also just arrived back from a month travelling around Europe to study the methods and structures of FC Barcelona, FC Girona and AS Monaco, which was fascinating, and I am very appreciative of the access and support from these clubs.“I definitely want to return to management and my next job will not be down to the size of the club or the size of the support or the country that they play in.

It will all be down to the people that I work with.
