Furious SFA chiefs have written to UEFA to demand an explanation for the decision to rob Scott McTominay of his wonder goal in Seville.Record Sport understands Hampden’s top brass have sent a letter demanding answers from European football’s governing body and head of refereeing Roberto Rossetti in particular.

And, high up on the list of questions, is why VAR officials did not check for a possible penalty committed against Lyndon Dykes, as McTominay’s free-kick was fizzing beyond the striker and into the roof of Spain’s net.Dykes was pinned by a Spanish defender at the front post and had two arms wrapped around his chest, a split second before Jack Hendry brushed into keeper Unai Simon.

The goal was chopped off by controversial ref Serdar Gozubuyuk after he studied replays on the pitch side monitor at VAR’s request.

At the time Gozubuyuk appeared to blow for a foul on Simon. But, to further muddy the waters, UEFA insisted this afternoon that Hendry was, in fact, caught in an offside position and affecting play as McTominay’s rocket shot flew into the net. That explanation also flies in the face of established VAR protocol as all potential offside checks are carried out by the technology and not then subject to further scrutiny from the human eye - meaning Gozubuyuk should not have been asked to intervene in the first place. And that’s why the SFA have refused to take the decision process lying down, even though manager Steve Clarke insisted afterwards that there was ‘no point’ in launching any formal protest.
