A Scots soldier who tragically died from heatstroke may have survived if he had received treatment earlier, a report has found.Connor Morrison, of 23 Parachute Engineer Regiment, collapsed during a group run on July 21, 2022.
The 20-year-old, who was originally from East Kilbride, was taken to hospital and admitted to intensive care. He sadly died two days later.
A service inquiry by a Defence Safety Authority (DSA) panel found that the symptoms displayed by the young Sapper were “consistent” with exertional heatstroke, the Mirror reports. The damning report states clinical decision-making was potentially hindered as there was mutual understanding of who was present and their respective medical abilities.
They also found that the clinical guidance on heatstroke issued to ambulance personnel was insufficient.Improved lesson planning and more thought about the composition of the group who took part in the session plus a formal heat checklist would have been helpful to have been in place, the document added. It made 41 recommendations altogether and says "when active measures were applied it may have been too late to be effective".
