Scots couple die days apart from cancer as son pays tribute

A Scots Dad has spoken about the heartache of losing both of his parents to cancer a few days apart.Mark Stewart's Dad, Roy Stewart, 72, bravely fought myeloma for ten years with his wife Erika by his side.

But while Roy was in hospital Erika 73, was diagnosed with cancer in her bowel and stomach. Mark believes Erika, who he described as "the best mum", kept her illness hidden to focus on caring for Roy.Roy died in October 2016 and Erika passed away two days later in a bed across the hall from her beloved husband, who was in the same hospice.Mark, from Haddington, has paid tribute to his parents as he gears up to "pay it forward" by doing Kilt Walks to support charities that helped his family.The dad-of-three will complete four Kilt Walks across the country, in Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and Edinburgh to raise cash for MacMillan Cancer and Myeloma UK, Edinburgh Live reports.The 53-year-old said: “My dad was 62 when he was told that he would only have two years to live but he was a stubborn man and managed to fight like hell until he was 72.

Three days after he died, I lost my mum to cancer, which was devastating for the family.“With my dad being ill for so long, mum was his primary carer and she never focused on herself at all.

She was in the hospital visiting my dad one day and she was not feeling well.“They took her in and ran tests and found cancer was everywhere.
