Rutherglen Glencairn will be 'underdogs' against Shotts, insists boss

Boss Joe Pryce hopes ‘underdog’ status suits Rutherglen Glencairn when they head into a tricky South Challenge Cup first round clash at Shotts Bon Accord on Saturday.The Hannah Park club pipped Glens to West of Scotland Premier Division promotion last season, and while they’re still finding their feet in the top flight, will be favourites to progress.Glencairn are on top form of their own, however, and leapfrogged Arthurlie to the top of the First Division with a 3-2 win at the Hamish B.

They managed to gain promotion at our expense last season, so we’re up against a side that are a division above us, and away from home in the cup is never easy, so we’ll go into that game as underdogs.“John McKeown has a good team down there, he’s a good coach and has his sides well organised and difficult to play against – they always give you a good welcome and we’re looking forward to the game.”Glencairn were 3-0 up on Saturday and held onto the three points at 3-2, with two late Arthurlie goals, and Pryce says the challenge is to try and stay top for as long as they can.Pryce said: “It’s nice to be top in August.

I’d hope to be in the top three in May if we could manage it, but it’s certainly nice to get there.”Pryce has added goals to Glencairn, but says they need to stop conceding at the other end, as they headed to Maybole last night (Tuesday) in league duty.He said: “We have scored a few goals, and that’s an aspect of the team that we knew we had to improve on last season.“Ryan McManus was the only player that hit double figures and he’s in terrific form, having scored six goals in four games – he’s really firing
