Police were left gobsmacked after pulling over a driver and realising he was one of Britain's worst with a staggering 96 points on his licence.

Officers stopped the Vauxhall Astra in Stoke-on-Trent on Boxing Day after it flagged up as being uninsured. They discovered the 23-year-old driver was already disqualified and had a whopping 96 points to his name.

Staffordshire Police seized the vehicle and reported him for driving without insurance and driving while disqualified following the incident on Christine Street in Bucknall in the north-east of the city. The force said they would also be liaising with the Crown Prosecution Service about a possible prison sentence for the driver.People can be disqualified from driving for six months for building up 12 or more penalty points within three years, with the limit dropping to six points for new drivers.They face a 12-month ban if they pick up a second disqualification within three years and a two-year ban if they get a third disqualification.Sharing details of the incident on X, formerly Twitter, Staffordshire Police Roads Policing Unit said: "Unbelievably this chap had 96 points already on his licence. "We will be asking the CPS to make representations for a custodial sentence due to the clear lack of care for the law."
