Large numbers of Child Benefit claimants have been contacted by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over delayed payments. Roughly 577,000 people were affected by a "processing error" that left them short on cash.
Fortunately, you can still claim the money back but you may need to raise a complaint directly to HMRC first. According to MoneySavingExpert, HMRC says it will compensate those affected by the issue with £50.
However, the government department will first carry out an assessment to determine the vulnerability of the claimant, how impacted they were by the error, and how long the problem was unresolved for.
HMRC has also stated that it will compensate any expenses that were charged as a result of the error. This might include an unauthorised overdraft or failed direct debit charge.
