Nausea “During the first trimester oestrogen increases rapidly and this is what causes the nausea that many women experience,” explains Dr Kinsella. “This tends to ease off by the second trimester, something that’s usually put down to the decrease in levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) hormone and the change in levels of progesterone and oestrogen.” Enlarged breasts “This increase in oestrogen levels also plays a large part in milk duct development which results in enlarged breasts in the second trimester,” says Dr Kinsella.
