Martin Lewis has shared his expert advice for Scots who have experienced cancelled or delayed flights.There's nothing worse than arriving at the airport excited for a trip only to get hit by delays or be unable to take off at all.

Luckily, the money guru has explained how you can benefit financially from the unfortunate situation - even if it occurred five years ago.In the latest Money Savings Expert newsletter, Martin explains how flyers can get hundreds of pounds back "on top of any refund or alternative flight" offered by airlines.For instance, to get compensation for a cancelled flight, you may think that you have to put in a claim right away for any results.

But according to Martin Lewis, Scots can make claims for flights impacted within the last five years.This means that if a flight you booked out of Scotland between now and 2018 was axed, you can still try to claim compensation if you meet criteria.

In England, this time frame is slightly larger at six years.The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) states that flyers affected by cancelled flights could be entitled up to £500 compensation, so it's definitely worth taking a look at those older trips.However, the expert stressed that the tips only apply if the cancelled or delayed flight is the airline's fault due to factors like staff shortages - compared to "extraordinary" weather events which they aren't responsible for.If you're significantly delayed at the airport, Martin highlighted that the airline must look after you.
