Manchester United's protracted takeover saga could finally be set for a conclusion. Current owners the Glazers announced in November last year that they would be 'seeking strategic alternatives' that raised hopes that the unpopular American regime could be set to sign off a full sale of the club.

Failsworth-born INEOS owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe quickly registered his interest to invest in the club that he has supported since childhood alongside Qatari banker and fellow Reds fan Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani.

A full sale is no longer on the cards, however, with Sheikh Jassim ending his interest in October - leaving the way clear for Ratcliffe.

He is now set to acquire a 25 per cent stake in the club that will see him take control of United's footballing operations.
