A Manchester MP has told Rishi Sunak to start taking Islamophobia seriously in a fiery exchange in Parliament. Afzal Khan accused Conservatives of peddling far-right conspiracy theories about Islamists and Muslims 'taking over Britain' at Prime Minister's Questions.

It comes as the government prepares to publish new plans on tackling extremism in the UK. But Mr Khan, who is Manchester Gorton's Labour MP, said that the Prime Minister should get 'his own house in order' and stamp out racism and extremism within his own party.

It comes after Lee Anderson, the party's former vice-chairman who this week defected to Nigel Farage's Reform UK, had the Tory whip removed due to comments he made about London mayor Sadiq Khan being controlled by 'Islamists'.

In another racism row affecting the Tories, a Conservative minister said this morning (March 13) that the party will not return a £10m donation from businessman Frank Hester who has been accused of making racist remarks - despite No 10 Downing Street describing the comments as 'racist and wrong'.
