Manchester city centre eyesore abandoned for 13 years could soon be transformed

A historic city centre building next to Manchester’s busiest tram stop that’s been abandoned for 13 years is to get a new lease of life.

77-79 Mosley Street, which sits at the corner of Mosley Street and Princess Street, is a stone’s throw from St Peter’s Square and the busiest Metrolink station on the network.

But despite its prime location, the office block has been empty for 13 years. Now, architect Atelier MB has unveiled plans to restore the office to its former glory by renovating office space.

Its plans will also see ‘historic shop fronts reinstated’ on the grade-II listed building to ‘create new retail and restaurant spaces’. READ MORE:  Car TRAPPED after driving into Metrolink tunnel at Manchester Piccadilly with trams suspended Atelier MB boss Andrew Burns said 77-79 Mosley Street ‘is a significant building’. “[It] dates back to the 1860s and it has been vacant for 13 years,” he added. “It was originally designed and built as speculative office and warehouse space, so it is fitting we are retaining its original use. “We have worked closely with OBI to make sure the office space and amenities retain the historic character of the building and set a high-quality standard to meet the needs of today’s occupiers. “The buildings’ prominent location, facing both the Manchester Art Gallery and onto St Peter’s Square makes it an important part of the transformation of the core of the city centre as we look forward to the completion of the Town Hall restoration project.” All in all, there will be enough room for 250 jobs once the project is complete, with 12,942 sq ft of office and 8,751 sq ft retail/leisure space.
